THE SURVIVAL VALUE OF A HANDBOW OR CROSSBOW

Whether it concerns a survival situation or an outdoor living situation, … in both cases a bow is a vital instrument to have, as it can be used for hunting. This is indispensable, especially in the winter months, as during a thick layer of snow there is nothing else to collect in terms of edible matters. So one is dependent on hunting game. You can also hunt fish with a handbow or a crossbow which is usually a much faster and more effective way of fishing than the traditional way with a fishing rod or fishing gear.

However, one must take into account the optical refrection effect of the water surface, as well as the depth of the water, in order to avoid damaging the arrow of the crossbow or handbow at the bottom of the water. Preferably in water depth of at least 4 to 5 meters or water with a soft soil or sandy bottom. If the water is too shallow with a stone bottom, it is advisable to use a spear instead of a bow.

One of the great advantages of hunting with a bow is that it makes almost no noise unlike a rifle. Another big advantage is that when you run out of ammunition for your rifle, you are like a knight without his horse. With a handbow or crossbow, this is a completely different story ! In this case, nature offers the solution. If you are handy, you can make your own arrows from straight-wire and straight-sawn wood ! This allows you to produce your ammo yourself from an almost inexhaustible source. Certainly over many years in the wild,…this is a very big advantage.

 

FURTHER POSSIBILITIES OF A CROSSBOW OR HANDBOW

If you are hunting underwater in the summer, you can do this from the kayak, and even at night with a waterproof flashlight or diving lamp, accompanied by diving equipment ! The hunting area can be demarcated by making buoys from watertight bags tied to rocks that reach to the bottom. You can also build a tent in the trees to hunt from a camouflaged position, with the comfort of a sleeping bag and a comfortable mattress, as it can sometimes take hours to observe a prey.  In such a case, it is also worthwhile in such tent to have a stove with a chair and a table for cooking food, as it can sometimes take days to get a deer or wild boar within range.
